A major goal for the CassLocal.com project, was to make small business support as convenient as possible. If you have a small business, you know that job one, is to make your businesses as simple, and convenient as possible to interact with.
The Corona $1200 checks, are starting to arrive this week. We know that some fortunate Nebraskans are not desperate and might consider helping struggling small businesses, Churches and Non-Profit organizations with a donation or better yet buying Gift Cards. We encourage restaurants, bars, basically any small businesses to get a Gift Card account from companies like Square. This is a convenient way for fortunate Nebraskan's to inject life saving cash into the business, in echange for Goods and Services later when the storm passes. None of this is possible, unless you add your business or Organization to www.CassLocal.com free.

PCS Superintendent Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update-Apr. 17, 2020

Parents/Guardians/Patrons, Good evening. Who would have anticipated several inches of snow in the middle of April? That certainly got our attention, along with about 63 degrees forecasted for Saturday. All of our snow might be gone.

Yet, COVID-19 continues for all of us. I hope everyone is able to spend some quality time with their families.

If you are experiencing cabin fever, there is an event that might be worthy of checking out Saturday night. The event is One World: Together at Home. The event includes performances by many musical artists. Information is available at https://yhoo.it/3euBuTc.

Let’s all remain diligent with implementing steps to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and “flatten the curve.” Check out our information page at https://bit.ly/2xzwOu3 that includes helpful tips about preventing the spread of COVID-19.

On April 1, 2020, Governor Ricketts issued a Directed Health Measure (https://bit.ly/2xM4xAR) that stated schools statewide were directed to operate without students in their buildings through May 31, 2020.  Extracurricular activities were also cancelled statewide. That being said, we will not have classes, activities or events with students at our buildings until after at least May 31, 2020.

 -

This is a very special time of year for our students, particularly our seniors. Accordingly, Board President Ken Winters, high school principal Todd Halvorsen, and I have been working with our student advisory regarding ways to honor and recognize the accomplishments of our students this year.

-

We are planning an audio Graduation Broadcast in cooperation with B103 Radio on our commencement date of May 9, 2020. It will be accessible via the internet. The broadcast is scheduled for 10:00 AM and will reflect a schedule similar to our in-person ceremony. More information will be provided in future weekly updates.

In addition to an audio Graduation Broadcast on May 9, we identified potential dates to have a traditional, in-person ceremony in which students walk and receive their diplomas. The first potential date for this event was slated for Saturday, June 27, with a back-up date of July 25.

However, Nebraska Department of Education (NDE) Commissioner Dr. Matt Blomstedt issued a letter (https://bit.ly/2ysxWA7) yesterday (Thu., April 16) indicating that he and Governor Ricketts advise that any in-person graduation ceremony be scheduled in late summer (July or August). So, we will keep our date of July 25 on the calendar for the in-person ceremony, in addition to the Graduation Broadcast that is scheduled for Saturday, May 9. We will also need approval of local health officials for the in-person ceremony. We are hopeful that the weather will cooperate with us and the in-person ceremony can be held outside in our turf stadium.

-

We also identified potential dates for prom. The dates are June 19 and July 17. Given the NDE guidance relative to in-person graduation ceremonies, I anticipate we will need to focus our attention on July 17 for prom.

Honors Night

Honors Night is scheduled for Wednesday, May 6. We are in the process of planning a virtual honors night ceremony on that date. We plan to have it viewable online. More details will be provided in future weekly updates. The ceremony will be accessible via the internet.

If there are other events for which you have questions, please contact the building administrator.

 -

Thank you to our students, parents, and staff members for their high levels of engagement in the remote learning environment. Our continuity of learning plan (CLP) is available at https://bit.ly/2x07ptL.

Our dedicated professionals are implementing the learning plan to support students for advancement to the next grade level. Seniors that were on track for graduation should remain on that path, with support from our educators. Seniors that were not on track for graduation will have support available to assist them with getting on track for graduation.

Grading remains an ongoing topic of discussion. If you have not received information about grading from the buildings where your children attend school, you can anticipate messages from our building principals sometime next week.

If you have questions or comments about anything related to the remote learning plans for your children, please contact the building principals where your children attend school.

-

The Plattsmouth Community Schools and OPAA! continue to provide Grab-N-Go breakfasts and lunches at no charge for any child in a household from birth to age 18 regardless of income. Meals are being distributed by the sidewalk near the front entrance of Plattsmouth Middle School at 1724 8th Ave. It is a drive-thru service each Monday from 6:30 AM to 9:00 AM, 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, and 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. On Monday, April 13, we distributed 6140 meals to children!

In an effort to increase safety, we are implementing some procedures for handing out the food to families. If possible, when you drive up for your food, we would like to place your food in a trunk or an empty back seat. This will aid in maintaining a 6-foot distance between people. If there is not a trunk or empty back seat available, you might be asked to grab your food from a table. Then, the volunteers plan to wipe down the table before the next customer. Please be patient with our food service volunteers.

To help us get an accurate meal count, if you need food assistance, please complete the survey at this link (https://bit.ly/3a82V2r). The survey only needs to be completed one time per household. The survey does not need to be completed every week. If you are unable to complete the survey online, please call 402-296-3361 and provide the necessary information.

-

Our school social workers prepared another message that includes tips for coping with COVID-19. Go to https://bit.ly/2Xqgzus and read their message.

If you or someone you know needs assistance with water, food, or other supplies, please contact the school social worker at the building where your child attends school. With your support, our bond issue passed in May of 2019. Our Board of Education approved a proposal from Lund-Ross Constructors for some high school projects. Lund-Ross Constructors started construction of our high school skilled and technical sciences building addition. There is also heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) work being done at our middle school.

At the April 13 meeting, our Board of Education approved proposals from the AOI Corporation for projects at our early childhood center and projects at our elementary school/middle school. We are hopeful that construction will start soon at those sites as well.

-

Each year, there are staff members that retire or resign and move on to other opportunities. This year, middle school principal Mark Smith decided to pursue retirement, upon the conclusion of his 2019-2020 contract. We would like to thank Mr. Smith for his decades of services to PCS. John Campin was hired to be our middle school principal for the 2020-2021 school year. I plan to provide information about other certified staff changes in future weekly updates.

-

With your support, we are successfully navigating uncharted waters. Trust that our students are in good hands with our dedicated professionals. We have a resilient community with residents that continue to unite and support one another. I believe this situation will make us even stronger together. Thank you for your support of our students, staff members, families, Board members, and our entire community. We are #PLATTSMOUTHSTRONG!

Best regards,

-

Superintendent Dr. Richard E. Hasty
