Desserts with Dan on November 7
The library's annual dinner with the humanities is taking a turn toward the sweets. Instead of dinner, the library will be serving desserts before the musical performance of Dan Holtz. Dan's presentation, "Nebraska through Song and Story", will feature songs played on guitar and harmonica. Desserts will be served at 6:15 pm on Thursday, November 7, with Dan's performance at 6:30 pm.
Nebraska has not only a rich tradition in literature but also a rich, less-publicized tradition in music. This program interweaves songs with excerpts from works by Willa Cather, John Neihardt, Mari Sandoz and Bess Streeter Aldrich. In a narrative from about 1850 to 1904, it tells the stories of the people who came to and through early Nebraska, the pioneers who crossed the overland trails, the settlers and the Native Americans.
Dan Holtz is a retired professor of English at Peru State College. He is the recipient of the 2015 Addison E. Sheldon Award for the preservation and interpretation of Nebraska history. In June 2016, he released his second CD, “All Original, All Nebraska,” a collection songs he wrote about people, places, and events in Nebraska.
This program is sponsored by Humanities Nebraska and the library through the HN Speakers Bureau. It's free and open to the public. Reservations are preferred due to limited seating. Call 402-296-4154 x24.

2019 No Limits Fall Activism Summit
Big Tobacco has a long history of marketing its deadly products to youth through manipulation and deception, and we’ve seen it all and had enough of it! As youth, we have the voice of change in this world and the power to make a positive difference. By using our voice, we will continue to stand up against Big Tobacco, bringing attention to the environmental impacts of tobacco products and marketing toward youth. Youth can empower, help guide and provide our peers with resources to create the change.
A few of the topics youth will learn about include No Limits and Big Tobacco 101, Big Tobacco’s history of manipulative marketing tactics, the positive difference youth are capable of making, how tobacco harms the environment, and how to take strategic steps in the right direction to make change a reality.
Here’s a quick summary:
When: November 16 – 17, 2019
Where: Divots Conference Center, Norfolk, NE
Cost: FREE (We’ll even pick you up!)
We’re looking for Nebraska youth who:
Are 12–18 years old, in grades 7–12.
Want to find out the truth behind Big Tobacco’s lies.
Are willing to take action against tobacco in their community and state.
Do you need a group or sponsor?
Both individuals and groups are welcome. A group sponsor is encouraged but not required.
